A Beginner's Guide to Distilling Alcohol

A distiller is a special piece of equipment used to create liquor. This type of alcohol is made from grains, fruits, vegetables, sugar, and other materials. The remaining liquid is separated into four parts: the 'heads' (the volatile alcohols), the 'tails' (the less desirable compounds), and the 'heart' (the desired ethanol alcohol). The final product is then cooled down and ready for blending. It is possible to distil a mixture of all these components. The resulting mixture is called a "waste'.

The heart is the distilled product. It contains large amounts of acetone, butyl alcohol, and aldehydes. The latter is a more stable substance. Its boiling point is lower than ethanol.
